Preventive Services

What kind of preventive services does Medicare cover?

Medicare covers more than just the medical treatments for conditions you already have. You are also able to access preventive services, which may save you more money in the long run. This may also enable you to live a longer, fuller life.

Which Part of Medicare Offers Preventive Care?

Preventive care entails procedures or services that will detect any potential health issue and deal with it before it gets worse. Or, it can involve vaccines to strengthen your immune system and keep you from falling prey to avoidable illnesses.

Preventive care falls under Medicare Part B. While Part B requires a monthly premium, and while it is purchased separately from Part A, it is still worth enrolling despite being optional. If you choose to enroll in Medicare Part B, yet need financial assistance, you may consider joining a Medicare Supplement Plan. You can also join a Medicare Savings Program if necessary.

What Are the Preventive Services?

Preventive services consist of:Screenings (cancer, cardiovascular disease, HIV, depression, etc.)
Counseling sessions (nutrition, obesity counseling, tobacco abuse prevention, etc.)
Examinations (mammographies, pap, pelvic, prostate, etc.) `
Vaccinations (for hepatitis B, flu, and pneumonia)
Bone Mass Measurements

With these, you can address issues before they get out of control. Screenings for cancer can allow for treatment that can prevent an early death. Counseling adds a mental health component that can help you cease unhealthy behaviors or coping mechanisms. Examinations (such as mammograms and prostate exams) are another area in which a cancerous tumor can be detected early on.

This is why joining Medicare Part B is strongly encouraged.

More coverage?

Medicare Advantage expands upon Part B’s preventive services. Medicare Part B does not offer gym memberships, dental, or vision, among other services. These are preventive in that neglecting these facets of healthcare can lead to other complications.

As mentioned before, Medicare Supplement Plans and Medicare Savings Plans may be looking into if you are in need of additional financial help.
