Can I enroll in Medicare if I’m still working?

Medicare does not require you to have Medicare as your only insurer. As long as you meet the requirements of enrolling in Medicare, you can have it regardless of employment status. This way, you can reap additional benefits along with the insurance coverage your employer has made available to you.

How will this work when I already have health insurance from my employer?

In this context, the different types of health insurance you have are considered “payers.” The first payer will be the primary insurance. The second will cover what remains after the first payer covers all that it can. However, the second payer may not cover all the uncovered costs left over by the primary payer. You may be able to get further supplemental health insurance, which would increase the chances of having no out-of-pocket expenses.

Would my employer’s insurance be the first or second payer?

In most cases, the insurance you get from your employer will be the primary payer. The employer’s insurance will pay, and then that remaining balance is sent to Medicare. If you are signed up for a Medigap Supplemental Plan, that will be the final destination for your healthcare costs.

Medicare becomes the first payer in cases such as:

  • If your employer has 20 or fewer employees
  • If you choose not to enroll in your employer’s group health plan
  • Getting coverage from a former employer after you have retired
Can I do this with Medicare Advantage?

No. Here is the reason why:

One of the conditions of Medicare Advantage is that you cannot have supplemental coverage. Because of this, you’re given one option or the other. You can drop Medicare Advantage and enter a Special Enrollment Period in which you can sign up for your employer’s health coverage. This can happen at any time your employer permits you to change the plan.
